Skillfull Meditation Project

Nelly Kaufer

I was introduced to meditation on a Vipassana retreat with Ruth Denison in 1978. Since this retreat I have kept up a regular meditation practice because my days go better. I began teaching Vipassana meditation in the 1980's, primarily for women, as there were no female meditation teachers in my community. I completed a 3-year mindfulness teacher training with Jacqueline Mandell in the 1990's. In 1989 I received a master's degree in transpersonal psychology in which I focused on the integration of psychotherapy and Buddhism. Shortly after that, I co-authored a book in which I interviewed women about their spiritual experiences: A Woman’s Guide to Spiritual Renewal (HarperSanFrancisco 1994)

I met Jason Siff at a Buddhism and Psychotherapy conference in 2004 and entered SMP teacher training several months later. Because I have witnessed a more intimate understanding of dharma along with a kinder regard for the variety of meditative experiences, I now teach meditation exclusively using the Recollective Awareness approach.

I lead weekly groups, as well as workshops and retreats, work with students one-on-one and with their meditation journals. I live and teach in Portland, Oregon, and welcome invitations to teach in Oregon and Washington.
